Human chain: demanding measures to minimize damage from looming earthquakes

Eight ALRD activists participated in a human chain organised by Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon [Movement for Environment], Bangladesh Institute of Planners and Association for Land Reform and Development on 13 May 2015 at 10:30 am in front of National Press Club, Dhaka.

People from Dhaka city both male and female participated in the human chain to press home the demand to identify and demolish risky buildings of the country, especially the capital city where 45,000 people live per square kilometer.

The devastation as a result of repeated shocks and aftershocks from earthquakes since 25^th of April 2015 in neighbouring Nepal is worrisome for Bangladesh.  It is not far from the major fault lines at the juncture of the Indian and the Eurasian plates causing earthquakes and in high risk of jolts any time later.

The speakers of the organisers urged the government to get prepared efficiently and effectively and for this to happen, first priority should be identifying and demolishing risky buildings rehabilitating the dwellers of the respective buildings.

They also criticised about the numbers of risky buildings in Dhaka city which is differed by different government agencies.
